With the harshness of winter settling in this week {snow, bitter temps, a cold virus}, I can only be grateful that it is now rather than...
...when the new baby arrived and we were traveling back and forth with the children between our home and their home and the hospital
...during moving weekend when our family was traveling busy roads in separate vehicles and all of their worldly goods were being hauled into the new house
...when Ron was ill and in the hospital, or even when he was home but using a walker or a cane, and when I was doing the driving.
Yes, now I have the luxury of staying home and feeding the woodstove and hunkering down.
Now, we are wintering.
- Simplifying decor.
- Enjoying cozy candlelight.
- Making soup. Last night it was Baked Potato Soup. Comfort food.
- Watching Downton Abbey. Relishing this last season and wondering what winter Sunday evenings will be like without it!
- Drinking hot coffee. Drinking hot tea. (Key word: hot.)
- Getting our school work done...even if it means reading in our pj's while nursing a cold.
- Looking at the snowy scenes that are outside our windows.
- Keeping a few snippings of rosemary on my kitchen window sill.
- Tackling miniprojects. A miniproject is a little extra task (not one in the normal round of chores) that can be accomplished in 15 to 30 minutes.
- Crafting. I finally gathered all my supplies for a penny runner. I plan to begin it this week.
- Planning. Always planning.
And even though this has nothing at all to do with wintering (although she is a winter baby ~smile~), I must show you a picture (or two) (or even three) of Macie.
Edited to add:
So far the cold virus has only struck Bekah at our house. But my parents have both been sick and our son's family have all had it.

Are you wintering? What sorts of things are you doing?
I made soup and homemade buttermilk biscuits last night, candles always lit, cozy throws to snuggle up in. I'm enjoying my rose bush on my kitchen table, and flannel sheets. Reading, movies, lots of tea.

Ahhhh...lovely. All except for the having colds part. Hope that you both are feeling better soon. Your photography never disappoints.
ReplyDeleteIt strikes me that Kristin must be terribly busy with a new baby and homeschooling and all the things that a buzzing household needs. She must have some good helpers! Macie sure is adorable.
Awe, such a sweet photo of Macie and you, Cheryl! Winter is definitely here, even if it was a little late coming. I'm interested in your penny runner--I've considered making one myself. Please share when you can. Yes, lots of warm food and drink to help ward off the cold weather. Baked potato soup sounds perfect as the winds howl and the cold seeps in. I must try your recipe. Take care of yourself, dear one. ♥
ReplyDeleteP.S. I do love the photo of the aprons hanging on the door! Lovely! ♥
Well, it seems our wintering here is getting a late start. We had a few flurries on Sunday but we are in the deep freeze now and are supposed to get some snow at the end of the week...BUT I never believe it until I see it! I plan to make bean & ham soup with corn bread this weekend. Snow or not, it is going to be cold. That little Macie is a precious angel...how blessed you must be feeling :)
ReplyDeleteWintering over here...well as much as So. Calif winters, lol. It has been chilly enough to light a few fires and snuggle under a throw though so I am not complaining. Made a gluten free chicken pot pie on Sunday and really enjoyed that. Can't wait to see your runner. LOVED all of your photos as always. The baby is just adorable...soo sweet. And yes I agree your cold picked a good time to show up I guess if it had to show up at all.. Feel better and enjoy the rest of your week!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the new grandchild. She is beautiful. I like all the wintering things you've listed, and I am doing most of them, too. I may even get to a craft or two. 😉. But this is so not my season. I acknowledge that we have been blessed til mid January.
ReplyDeleteLove your wintering list! I'm grateful with you that when you had to the roads were easier to navigate. I'm a winter driving wimp. Ice and snow give me anxiety attacks if I have to drive...
ReplyDeleteYour new little granddaughter is so sweet. We have a different kind of winter here in the Pacific Northwest so we are just dodging rainfall during our daily walks!
What a lovely wintering list ... and one beautiful baby! Peaceful photos that give a sense of rest and retreat and rejuvenation. Loved my visit, Cheryl. Thank you!

I'm not at all fond of winter, but I don't mind the hunkering down part. And I quite enjoy the soups and food fixed in the oven that I don't usually make in warmer weather. Loved seeing your pretty photos, Cheryl, and the baby is just precious! Take care and stay warm!
ReplyDeleteLovely wintering photos. Lots of soup, lots of hot tea and sitting by the fire are some of my wintering joys these days.
ReplyDeleteThat Macie is one sweet baby. Enjoy the cuddles.
Much like you finding myself hunkering down on the cold, snowy, wintry days.
ReplyDeleteThankful I don't have to go out and praying for family members that do.
I love to make a cup of hot tea, light a candle and settle in with a good book on a cold, snowy day.
Love the pictures of your new precious grandaughter. Make me excited for our grandaughter who is expected in May.
Hope Bekah is soon feeling much better and that the rest of you stay well.
ReplyDeleteIt is cold for us here in s.e. FL, 49 and feels like it is 45. Yesterday I made a crockpot full of chili, using Italian sausage and ground beef. Delicious!
Hot drinks are definitely good on COLD days.
Have a nice cozy day today ~ FlowerLady
Yes! We're "wintering" - although not much in our schedule has changed. Thankful the road are now clear for our drives to be with my parents 3-4 times a week. In between, I catch my breath, read, work on a jigsaw puzzle, and try to figure out a way to stay warm and hydrated. (My skin and hair are especially dry...)
ReplyDeleteAhhh, such lovely photos of your home. Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteWintering here too. Staying indoors except for quick run to put washing out for the one sunny hour of the day...then rush to get it back in again. Turned the heating up, got out the scarves, big coats and gloves. Rugs round the knees in the evening.
ReplyDeleteRoll on Spring!
Getting ready to make our traditional snow day soup because I think we may have one of some sort. Sorry about the colds, but everything else sounds wonderful and cozy!
ReplyDeleteSo glad your winter held off a bit. What a sweetheart is that little Macie! Your photos are so homey and warm and inviting. I've never heard of baked potato soup. Sure does sound like comfort. My wintering has been reading, the fire, blogging, and hoping for some warmer temps.
ReplyDeleteCheryl, Macie is a beauty! I love the "wintering" photos of your cozy home. And I really like the idea of the miniprojects; note to self about that one!
