As the name of my blog indicates, I spend a lot of time thinking about home. Of course, my Heavenly Home is the one that is eternal, so that’s where I need to lay up my treasures, and that’s the one I’m striving for. But in the meantime, I have been given this tiny piece of the here-and-now—this home on the edge of town, this family, this neighborhood—in which to serve Him. And, though this is in the earthly realm, I want the things that happen here to be investments in the Heavenly realm.

A Country Living Sideboard



It was in 1982 that the December issue of Country Living arrived in our mailbox. As I did each month, I pored over the magazine, looking for house-y inspiration. We had lived in The Farmhouse for a year and a half, and we had a long way to go towards repairs and sprucing it up and making it pretty. A l-o-n-g way indeed. Kristin was two and Ryan was just a baby. We had little time and even less money. But we were making a home and we were always on the lookout for cheap affordable solutions. 

So on the cover of this issue, there was a fabulous sideboard! 



With a  closer look, we learned that the sideboard was designed by Adam Peck for Country Living and that we could order the plans! Ron could build it and we could have that sideboard!



We ordered the plans. Ron built it. I painted and finished it. And we have loved it all these many years!

Here is the sideboard last December. We didn't know it then, but it would be the last year that we would celebrate Christmas in The Farmhouse.




And now, here we are celebrating our first Christmas at Pineapple House!  This is the look of the sideboard this year, here in the new dining room.







Thirty-four years...and still in love with our Country Living sideboard!

    LOVE everything about this. The sideboard is beautiful, and the fact that Ron made it makes it all the more precious. Plus I just love pieces that hold memories and history. I really love the simple way you've decorated it every year for Christmas as well. Enjoy your week-end!

    I remember purchasing the occasional issue of Country Living in the 1980s and dreaming about living in a log home, then. Your side board, with its shaker legs is so attractive and indeed "country". The color shows off the pewter wonderfully. I spied an antique piece similar to your sideboard in an antique shop. It caught my eye, I can assure you. I'm so glad I slowed down enough today to read your delightful post. Happy Christmas.

    It's perfect. My mom always subscribed to Country Living and I loved pouring over that magazine. I loved looking at the house plans especially.

    Ron is a gifted carpenter and you make a great team. I love how you decorate each season to fit with the time period you love.

    Ron is a talented furniture maker! That is one amazing piece. It looks to be the perfect size and style for your home/s! You have adorned it beautifully for the Christmas holidays...a gilding of the lily with all the pewter and shine of the candles. For such young'uns, you two were very smart to recognize the longevity of such a classic in both function and form...even the finish is inspired.

    Oh, I loved hearing about your beautiful sideboard and how it came to be! For you it was Country Living magazine; for me it was the original Victoria magazine. I'd pour over the pages looking for ideas and inspiration that would translate into my own life and home.

    BTW, I also had magazines boxes of the wonderful Country Living magazines too. I'm grateful for those wonderful old magazines.

    I love your sideboard! How wonderful that y'all are do-it-yourself-ers, those things cost an arm and a leg, and more. It is a piece that will only improve with the years and is especially precious considering its origin. I'm happy to see it so comfy in your new dining room. Handyman and I are kind of dragging our feet getting things going this year. Could it be age? I'm afraid so. We have all kinds of ideas but have to keep stopping to rest or appply Blue Emu. :D A Blessed and Merry Christmas my friend. Isn't it exciting?
