As the name of my blog indicates, I spend a lot of time thinking about home. Of course, my Heavenly Home is the one that is eternal, so that’s where I need to lay up my treasures, and that’s the one I’m striving for. But in the meantime, I have been given this tiny piece of the here-and-now—this home on the edge of town, this family, this neighborhood—in which to serve Him. And, though this is in the earthly realm, I want the things that happen here to be investments in the Heavenly realm.

Thursday Potpourri

This week began my twenty-third year of homeschooling.

My student sported her pencil earrings to mark our first day, and we were off to a running start. The two of us are a pretty slow pair, but our first-week-of-school enthusiasm has spurred us upward and onward so far. So many things to discover, so much to soak in, so little time. (Only six years left!)

During the first week of school, I usually make some fall food. Pumpkin bread, hot soup, something. Not this week. With temperatures soaring to the 90s, we felt more like this Caribbean Chicken Salad. We'll save the pumpkin bread for next week. Hopefully.

It was just right for a tropical evening.

My house is having an identity crisis. The seashells are put away, but there is still a red geranium on the dining room table. The kitchen table has a brown checked runner, but the dining room has a white one. My fall mugs and my Friendly Village dishes are still in storage. I am itching to decorate for fall. Maybe this weekend...

Is your house festooned for fall?

My daughter Kristin wrote a lovely piece about life in this "in-between" season. You can read it ~here~.

My daughter Kati shared some of the autumn creepy crawlies we've been seeing around here lately. These are not "lovely" creatures, but her (photographic, not literal!) captures of them are amazing. Such detail!  (Take a peek ~here~ if you dare!)

Our Creator is awesome!

What have you been up to this summer-to-autumn week?

  1. Happy First Week Back To Homeschool, and it is more like mid summer with this heat. That tropical salad looks delish. I want to bake but way too hot, still cleaning and putting away summer (& a little late spring) decor. Maybe this weekend. xo

  2. Back to routine - it's a good thing. My house isn't decorated for fall and won't be for awhile. I like to wait until the season is officially here - September 21. I did put a pot of mums on my front porch.

Kristin's piece is indeed lovely. I don't dare venture over to Kati's site.

  3. Those are cute earrings! No fall here...it is still hot as blazes. The link to the salad is not working. It looks delicious and it is beautiful as well. Happy school days!

  5. Those are the cutest earrings! Hope that Bekah enjoys the book.

That salad looks delicious. We've had morning thunderstorms and now the temp has gone from 84 to 70. What a nice relief!

If you count a turkey plate, a pumpkin soda bottle, and three jack be littles a festooning, then we are festooned. = D

Praying for your 2013/14 Schoolyear to be blessed!

  6. I hope your week has been great! I always love to get started!

I have decorated but that is because I am leaving for a week and when I get back it will be Autumn. I have learned to do things when I am able, so it gets done. If I waited until I got back I may not have the time or help to get it done!

  7. I love the earrings...so cute!

It's been too hot here to think about decorating for fall and we could use some of that rain Vee has been getting too much of! I did do some shopping today and looked at stuff to make a new fall wreath for my door, but that's all I did...just look. I now have an excuse to go back. Haha!
