As the name of my blog indicates, I spend a lot of time thinking about home. Of course, my Heavenly Home is the one that is eternal, so that’s where I need to lay up my treasures, and that’s the one I’m striving for. But in the meantime, I have been given this tiny piece of the here-and-now—this home on the edge of town, this family, this neighborhood—in which to serve Him. And, though this is in the earthly realm, I want the things that happen here to be investments in the Heavenly realm.

A Saturday Chat

We've been busy these past few weeks! You already know we've been celebrating birthdays, but also...

  • We visited a water park along with three of the older grands.
  • I had tea and peach scones with a friend. (Thanks, Barbara!)
  • Ron and I went out for a low key anniversary celebration which included coffee, a few errands, and dinner out...and ended with an oh-so-romantic stop at Walmart. :)
  • My aunt and uncle treated Mom and me to a birthday lunch (thanks Robin and Tom!) and we came back to Pineapple House for lemon meringue pie.
  • Sarah and the children stayed after piano lessons (did I tell you that Bekah is teaching piano to her two nieces?) and joined us for lunch.
  • My friend Joanne and I went for our monthly Mama Coffee date.
  • We three girls and Mom met my sister Linda, my niece Amy, and my grand-nieces Isabel and Ivy for a day at the ocean. (And we had the most weather-perfect day of the summer!) (More on weather later.)
  • The ladies of our church met for fellowship and prayer here at Pineapple House this morning.

That was no one in our group, but it was fun to watch!

I have been tweaking house-y things. As in moving furniture from one room to another.

Last Saturday morning, I had a thought. (That can be dangerous.)

What if...? I voiced my thought to Kati and Bekah. Since Dad has decided that he would like to make a reproduction step back cupboard, and since that will be a while (because Dad has a project list as long as his arm), and since I don't want to live with an empty space on that wall for the long term...what if we moved the jelly cupboard from the kitchen hallway to the dining room and the pie safe/school cabinet from the someday-library to the kitchen hallway and took out the school books and filled it with dishes...?

Kati: "That might be good."

And then she continued reading through her Facebook news feed...

So I did what any house-y person would do. Started moving furniture!

Kati: Mom, are you moving that cabinet by yourself?!

Of course, then she got up and the two of us pulled and hauled furniture and vacuumed and fetched dishes from the china closet down in the basement and unpacked one last box of dishes that we had missed before and decided on a display of white ironstone and yellow ware. For now.

Still considering what to hang over the cabinet...

Today, I had my first pumpkin spice iced coffee of the season! Ahhhh...

I am ready for fall!

Mom and I discussing the weather...

MOM: It's only supposed to be 82 degrees on our beach day. I hope we're not chilly.

ME: Mom, 82 is not chilly. It sounds like the perfect beach day to me.

MOM: It's supposed to warm up again. It's going to be 90 on Friday, so at least it will be nice for my birthday.

ME (in my head): "Nice"?!!

What about you? What kind of temperature is "nice"?

  1. Oh my nice for me is nothing over 75! Your conversation with your dear mom is making me smile. Sounds like a good fix for that space and I'm glad you got some help by and by. Dear and I moved a king sized mattress and box springs up our stairs this week and oye what a job that was. I keep reminding him I'm on medicare and not a young muscled man!! A new mattress is nice, though! And yes we moved the old set down to the basement which was quite a feat, too. Hope you have a relaxing Sunday!

  2. After the summer we've had, nice would be in the 80's or below. I've been complaining too much about the weather, sorry. You've had many blessings fill your busy days, Cheryl. I like the way your progression of thoughts went and then how you and Kati moved all of your lovelies into their spaces. That's the best kind of decorating in my book. I adore your beach photos. That's the only place to be during these hot summer days. Have a great weekend. ♥

  3. 95° is not nice...I worked upstairs at The Ponderosa at those temps. Phew. I could not take it for more than an hour.

Your mother is getting to that place (where most folks go) when they seem to really enjoy the heat. All of my older relatives have arrived and would feel similarly. Our joke about our grandmother was that one could fry steak on her kitchen table she had it so warm in her house. My mother would fume a bit saying things like, "I refuse to walk around naked, but YOU could put on a sweater." LOL

I love it when inspiration strikes! (Kati rather cracks me up.) The switcheroo looks fantastic. Pardon me, but I think I misse where the books went...must go back and read.

Enjoyed seeing the beach scenes and the well behaved seagulls! The little girls in their beach garments are adorable. I really like the gingham suit.

  4. I love 70 degrees! Or slightly cooler. It's still HOT in Texas but at least it isn't tripe digits!
It looks like you have had a wonderful summer! Love the beach pics and I love your cupboards!

  5. I have to be with your mom on this one. I, too, like the warmer temperatures. Cold weather hurts this body. Love the pie safe with dishes. So fun to rearrange and try new looks. Admire Bekah's new endeavor--what an accomplishment to teach someone else how to play piano. Blessings, Sharon D.

  7. 90 would be fine if a swimming pool was handy!

  8. I do love changing things around. And of course you are still finding the right way in your new house. Looks good! I am so hot the end of this summer, it seems my tolerance has dropped. We finally had some rain yesterday; the ground is parched. I think perfect would be 70s! As long as we could have a taste of winter.

  9. I knew Kati would jump in and help! I did buy pumpkin spice k-cups and Special K Pumpkin Spice Crunch cereal (limited edition-it is so good!). The yellow and white dishes really make the cabinet pop!

  10. I do like 82 compared to the high 90's we've had most of the summer but 72 sounds even better...EXCEPT when I want to be near the water. And speaking of water, these are lovely pics of your day at the beach...AND...speaking of the beach, I am counting the days 'til I am able to stick my feet in the sand and surf in a matter of a couple of weeks! My sis is flying in from Ohio and just us two "girls" are heading to the beach for a long birthday (mine) weekend! I am like you...if I want something moved, I just move it myself but I must ask you, have you ever used the Super Sliders? They have them for wood floors and carpeting. I have moved a heavy armoire all the way down my hallway into a bedroom and my hutch FULL of dishes clear across the room without removing one thing. They are amazing. If you've never tried them, I highly recommend them! BTW, I really like your re-arrangement :)

  11. Oh I enjoyed every newsy piece of this post! I love to move things around, but will admit I don't do it like I used to. I REALLY like the yellow and white dishes in that cupboard. The beach pics are sooo good, and agree with Vee. That gingham suit is just flat out adorable. To me the perfect weather is 72...which honestly we rarely see hear in good old sunny California. For a beach day I'd have to say that 80 is about as perfect as it gets though. The cool ocean breezes are always blowing to cool it off just enough. Hope you have a good week!

  13. Nice temperatures for me are between 76-81. :)
And HOW I can relate to the moving-the-furniture activity! I'll be glad when this is over!
