As the name of my blog indicates, I spend a lot of time thinking about home. Of course, my Heavenly Home is the one that is eternal, so that’s where I need to lay up my treasures, and that’s the one I’m striving for. But in the meantime, I have been given this tiny piece of the here-and-now—this home on the edge of town, this family, this neighborhood—in which to serve Him. And, though this is in the earthly realm, I want the things that happen here to be investments in the Heavenly realm.

Sunday Snapshots: Crab Cakes Instead of Birthday Cake

This weekend, we did not celebrate anyone's birthday! (What?) Having the birthday x 6 party last weekend made yesterday a "normal" Sunday, which we made into a simple summer seafood Sunday.

Sound good? It certainly was! Daughter-in-law Sarah brought crab dip and corn-on-the-cob. Daughter Kristin brought potato salad and cole slaw. I made crab cakes. Yes, we had some good summer eating! (I enjoyed it all the more knowing that summer is winding down and that this brutal summer weather pattern is going to break this week. Whew!)

As we were preparing to eat, I realized that I, a life-long Maryland girl, had never shared my recipe for Maryland Crab Cakes! So I snatched one off the platter and took a quick picture while everyone was filling their plates.

MARYLAND CRAB CAKES

Ingredients:
1 pound crab meat
2 slices stale white bread, crusts removed
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1 teaspoon dried parsley flakes
2 teaspoons Old Bay seasoning
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon mustard
1 tablespoon mayonnaise
1/2 stick butter, softened

Directions:
Cut bread into small cubes.

Combine all ingredients except the crab; mix well.

Very gently fold in crab, trying to keep meat in larger pieces.

Shape into cakes.
(The number of cakes depends on the size. I usually make 6 from this recipe.)

Chill cakes at least one hour.

Fry in hot shortening until brown on both sides. OR broil until golden brown.
(I prefer to broil. I set the broiler on high, put the pan of cakes on the bottom oven rack, and watch closely! It usually takes about 10 to 12 minutes.)

I didn't take many pictures yesterday. I guess I was enjoying the laid back, non-party afternoon. But I did pick up my camera when some of the kids were teaching the others to play Miss Mary Mack!

Paul wanted to play too! :)

Somebody messed up the words!

If you had to choose: Crab cakes or birthday cake?
(My answer is crab cakes!)

  1. I'd choose birthday cake! But, I would try your crab cakes! I grew up not liking much sea food but I've grown to like many things I never used to, so I may like crab cakes! ha ha!

But buttercream gets me every time!

  3. Oh it would be crab cakes for sure....it's been a while since Ive had either though after having to go gluten free. I am wondering how it would taste to substitute gluten free bread in this recipe Seems like it should work, but let me tell you it DID NOT in my dressing recipe. Enjoyed your pics as always.

  4. I'm sure your crab cakes are wonderful, but I don't eat shellfish so I would have a piece of your equally wonderful birthday cake.

  5. I'll take the crabcakes. I didn't know you were a Maryland girl! I'm a Texas girl. We are both a ways from home. We could spend a day telling our stories of how we ended up where we are now. :D
I'm so thankful that you posted a recipe for those. My daughters and I were talking recently of not having good crab cakes when we aren't on the coast. I'll bet your recipe is an authentically good one!
Though the price of that crab meat may make me a birthday 'cake' girl again! Have a great week!

  6. Cheryl, I'd take those beautiful crab cakes over just about anything. I love them! Your recipe is very similar to mine. I need to run to the market and get some crab meat!
Your children and grands are having the best time. There is joy on every face! ♥

  7. I guess the crab cakes are winning and that's what I'd say too. In fact I'm taking your recipe as they are one of my husband's most favorite foods! I'm glad you had a relaxing afternoon!

  8. Crab cakes! Not likely to get any of those here in North Texas, though! I settled for a chocolate cake when I turned 60 last Friday!

  9. Darling pics of the kids! Don't you just love it when you can see they're having a grand time! Being the inland woman that I am, even two hours from the shores of Gitchee Gumee, I have never ever eaten a crab cake. Ever. Growing up on a dairy farm, we ate what was available - beef, chicken, Swanson's chicken pot pies, and fish sticks. But I wouldn't mind trying one. Crab cake, that is. Sounds interesting.

  10. Well you know that this Maine girl just learned to like lobster last summer. I am going to taste the crab cakes and then make a beeline for the birthday cake.

I do not know the game they were playing, but it is very obvious that they were really having fun...it's fun to teach, too.

  11. I would say crab cakes please. Birthday cake doesn't float my boat these days. Fun to see the kids learning that fun hand game. I do remember playing that in the waaayyy past. Hope your week is going well and that there were some leftover crab cakes to enjoy today!

  14. Birthday cake every time! I'm with Deanna, buttercream is my one weakness! ;-) I don't care for seafood at all! 😫 But, I will share your crab cake recipe with my daughter and hubby. They both love them!
