As the name of my blog indicates, I spend a lot of time thinking about home. Of course, my Heavenly Home is the one that is eternal, so that’s where I need to lay up my treasures, and that’s the one I’m striving for. But in the meantime, I have been given this tiny piece of the here-and-now—this home on the edge of town, this family, this neighborhood—in which to serve Him. And, though this is in the earthly realm, I want the things that happen here to be investments in the Heavenly realm.

{Gathering the Moments} August

Is it possible to have a quiet but busy month? Because I think that is what August was for us this year.

Of course, we were busy with birthdays!
{August = birthdays} for our family!
Lots of parties, presents, sweets, and candles!

Birthday peeps: Ron, Ryan, Owen (8), Kristin, Mom, and me
Thanks to Sarah for the photo of the handsome birthday boy from Maine!

But there was also time for quiet pursuits.
For house projects, for leisurely drives, for frozen yogurt.
For having friends over for dinner.
For baking bread and for making cupcakes (twice).
For an evening out with two women friends and doing more talking than eating and catching up on one another's lives and some laughter and some tears and calling it all good.
And then Mama Coffee the next morning with more laughter and more tears and more good.

Time to pause. Time to reflect. Time to grow. Time to be grateful.
Time with the Lord.

The weather for this coming week is predicted to be summer-hot, but even so, summer is drawing to a close. Change is in the air. With the same glance, I see both blooming red impatiens and golden leaves fallen from the locust tree. The baby pyracantha (the one that replaced my long-loved bush that winter killed) has its first ever orange-tinted berries. I an eagerly awaiting my favorite season...autumn.

But I won't move on without a lingering look back at this lovely...quiet and busy...end-of-summer month.

Again this month, I am inviting you to join me in "gathering the moments." You may wish to share two or three photos, or several collages, or bunches of photos...with words, or without words. The link-up below will be a gathering place for us to reflect and share and connect. (The link-up will stay open for a week, so you have plenty of time to gather.)

  1. What a full month you and your family have had. Glad you got away for your anniversary. I love the shot with the sunshine streaming in the windows. I love Autumn, too.

  2. My birthday month too! And my first trip to Maine was in August, and lots of celebrating with friends and family my milestone birthday.

  3. It must all be relative as that month sounds very busy to me! Some pretty terrific people were born in August! Your mother, your husband, your son, your daughter, and yourself! (Oh and a grand, too..)

Crank up the AC and pretend that it's autumn. I'm going to hold onto summer for a while longer. I plan to join you tomorrow, if I can get it together.

  4. Your August sure was full of celebration! And as usual, my eye was drawn to the pictures of food (I can smell my supper cooking and I'm really hungry!)
I'm so glad to have spent a bit of time with you this month. A lot of laughter and a few tears with a dear friend are one in the same... good!

  5. That is a lot of August Birthdays! Fun!

I think you had a lovely month. I understand quiet, yet busy. I have times like that too. August has seemed quiet for us after we went to Florida in both June and July!

I want you to know it was all I could do to keep myself from jumping in the van and taking a road trip to see you on your birthday! When I mentioned that it was your birthday, at dinnertime, Sarah said "Let's go see them!" She was ready!

  6. I love how you speak of the quiet moments. If we can include that in a busy month, then we are doing well! Your beautiful photos and words reflect your inner heart and love of family and home. Next month you will welcome your favorite season!

  7. Hi Cheryl
you had some wonderful family moments in August - that is what I miss most of all with my family and grandies living on the other side of the world.
All those birthdays, celebrated so beautifully and an anniversary too!

I too enjoy the quiet moments, the one-on-one times with dear friends.

Happy September to you and yours.
    Shane

PS I see you've written about blogging - I'll pop back and read that when I get home from work tonight!
