As the name of my blog indicates, I spend a lot of time thinking about home. Of course, my Heavenly Home is the one that is eternal, so that’s where I need to lay up my treasures, and that’s the one I’m striving for. But in the meantime, I have been given this tiny piece of the here-and-now—this home on the edge of town, this family, this neighborhood—in which to serve Him. And, though this is in the earthly realm, I want the things that happen here to be investments in the Heavenly realm.

Tuesday Morning Chat

As August whirs right along, I thought I'd stop in with a little chat.

See that big smile on my girl's face? She bought a car this past weekend! I don't know who is happier, Kati or me. Her old car (a hand me down from her Dad) was on its last leg (wheel?), and we prayed every time she left the driveway. Whew! Thank the Lord for watching over her...and for these new wheels!

Ron had birthday celebration #2 on Sunday. The meal featured homemade oyster fritters, a special request of the birthday boy. Three of the eleven people enjoyed them. (Have you ever eaten an oyster fritter?) More of us enjoyed the Boston Cream Pie that we had for dessert!

Singing ♫ Happy Birthday ♫ to Papa (Dad)

Speaking of birthdays (actually we are "speaking of birthdays" all month long!), Owen's birthday is this week. He had his party with his sister Maddie over a week ago, but tomorrow he is officially 8!

Happy birthday, Owen!!

August isn't just for birthdays; there are three anniversaries too! (As an aside, we have asked Kati and Bekah to consider choosing a different month when their time comes.)

Brian and Kristin celebrated their 13th wedding anniversary yesterday. It seems like yesterday, and it seems like forever! Kristin shared some sweet pictures and memories on her blog. Happy anniversary, you two!

I had a great idea, so I thought.

I bought all of my August cards (ten of them, I think) at the end of July and put them in my card organizer. That way, I wouldn't forget to buy a card and have to scramble at the last minute. Genius, right? Piece of cake (so to speak).

Nope.

I have discovered that even if I have all of the cards selected, purchased, and filed, I still have to remember to give them! And that, my friends, is the flaw in my system. I am "a good forgetter" as Bekah once told me. Sigh...

Although I love to organize and be organized, it is an uphill struggle. I continue to work through my summer list. We have checked off all of the fun stuff except for one thing (which we plan to do this week!), but I'm still chipping away at all of those organizing tasks.

The floorcloth, however, is nearly done! I'll be doing a post about it next week: detailing the process, sharing what I learned, and, of course, showing the finished project!

Let's chat! What's left on your summer list? What things have you accomplished?

  1. I'm really good about forgetting cards as well. I can't wait to see your floorcloth.

I still have a few projects I want to finish before the baby gets here: purging kids' clothes and reorganizing my spice/baking cabinet. At this point, I'm not positive they're going to get done...we'll see.

  2. We are going to Williamsburg the first week of September! Be still my heart! From their we'll drive down to Emma's school and get her settled, then home without her. Boo! But so exciting at the same time!

We have been back to school since last week. I like taking days off during the year so I am always eager to get started at the beginning of August!

  3. I used to be a good card giver but not any more. I still have Amber's birthday card from June! I just SAY happy birthday now!

We have redone our laundry room. It is all finished except for the fine tuning.....paint touch ups and actually NAILING up the trim instead of the way I TACKED it up!

Last year I redid the hall in August so I guess I tend to do a big project every summer. Next year will be the dining room!

LOved seeing your family pics and hearing how you celebrate life!! THAT is something you ARE really good at!!!

  4. Boston Cream Pie! My mom used to make those occasionally. Love the stuff!

    Happy Birthday and Anniversary to all to whom it applies in August. {How's that for a general greeting?}

Kati's car looks so shiny, but not as bright as that smile she is wearing. Good for her! May it transport her safely for many years!

  5. Progress on organizing? Hooray! And more good cheers for the new car, birthdays, and anniversaries!

I use my computer's calendar feature to set up reminders for tasks. It saves my bacon!

  6. I wish I could say that I've made some progress this summer, but...sigh...it seems like I get more behind (pun intended, lol!) every day.
Your daughter looks so pretty in her new car!
I'm suddenly hungry for Boston Creme Pie! Haven't had that in such a long time and it sounds so good!

  7. Yay for Kati! And the oyster fritters sounds like something I might like to try...anything that includes the word "fritter" has to be something worth trying...lol! We had our 38th anniversary last week...can't believe it has been that many years! The floor cloth looks pretty amazing...looking forward to the unveiling!

  9. Lots of celebrations around your place this month. Funny how birthdays and anniversaries seem to concentrate for different families. Looking forward to seeing the floor cloth reveal.
I've accomplished a few things, like cleaning out the freezer and doing some sewing. Still more on my list that might get moved to fall projects!

  10. Our Josh and Laura were married in August of 2001, too. I'm laughing about you nudging the others to choose a different month for a wedding! I love to celebrate and it looks like you do, too. God bless all your August birthday folk and anniversary folk! Summer list? My bathroom hopefully will be completely done by the end of summer...oye. It would also be great to wash my windows inside and out...

  11. I am not talking about accomplishments...*thud*

Now that floorcloth looks interesting. Can't wait to read all about it.

Congrats to Kati on her new car! Hope that Kristin and her husband have a great anniversary! Are you watching the grands?

  12. August is a big birthday month for us as well, we are getting ready to celebrate two in the next two weeks. Our summer plans were kind of side tracked but we are hoping to get some time at the lake to celebrate the upcoming birthdays. BTW we love oyster fritters!

  14. You've had a busy month already! I'm impressed - and inspired. I don't think I can even hope to catch up.

I did just get back from dinner with my brother & sister-in-law from out of state who've been "up" here a couple of days to visit our father & mother. It was nice to see them ever so briefly this evening....They return to North Carolina in the morning.
