On this gray December afternoon...
We laid aside the school books, brewed a pot of coffee, put chicken and potatoes in the oven to roast, lit some candles. It was time for...

~ addressing Christmas cards ~
While we were busy with our quiet pursuits, we put in a favorite movie, Little Women, the 1994 version starring Winona Ryder. I have loved Little Women since I read the book as a young girl. I have watched (I think) every movie version that has been produced. But this one is my favorite. I can believe that these actors are the characters.
I have to confess, however, that there is another reason I love this movie. The house! I watch and I swoon over the paneled woodwork and the banister and the Christmas greenery. I ooh and aah over the wall sconces and the dishes on the Christmas breakfast table and the paint colors.
(Do you ever notice the home decor when you're watching a movie or television show?)
Today was a quiet contrast to the past weekend which was busy, busy. I find that I need both kinds of days - the exciting, celebrating, going kinds of days and the calm, productive, staying kinds of days.
Do you find that too?
It sounds like a wonderful day. My favorite Little Women movie is the one with Katharine Hepburn in it. You asked if anyone else looked at the decor in movies or television. I definitely do. Sometimes I record movies from the 30's and 40's, not because the storyline description sounds good, but because I like to see kitchens from that era. I like the movie Meet Me in St. Louis as much for the interior of the home they live in (and their dishes) as for Judy Garland's performance. I just found your site tonight.
ReplyDeleteOh yes, I do notice the decor in movies and television shows. The house in that version of Little Women is gorgeous. But my favourite version is the older one. I weep every time I watch it, when Beth dies.
ReplyDeleteYes, I need both kinds of days, too. It just seems to work out for the best that way. I do notice decor in movies, and I like Little Women, too, even though I am always so sad when Jo passes. Can't help it. xo
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like my kind of day. And Little Women is my favorite -- when I was a kid, my friends called me "Jo." I can't believe I haven't seen that movie version but I will have to find it. Yes, I look at the houses and decor in movies -- and this one sounds charming!
ReplyDeleteOh yes! I love that house, too. Karen at A Scrapbook of Inspiration has done a number of posts on the real house...I'll send the link along if I find it.
ReplyDeleteAnd watching that movie is the reason I hung a flannel ribbon on my wreath last year. I didn't this.
But the things I love best about this post are the lovely pictures of your girls and your card writing. So special!
Lovely, lovely, lovely!
ReplyDeleteA day of quiet pursuits and Little Women!
I love this movie especially at this time of year! I love the decor too and always think of this as a holiday movie!
Kindreds again!

Can you believe I have never watched that movie? I do notice the settings, as well as the clothes. That's partly why I like the Jane Austen movies so much. I'm also noticing YOUR house. Ahhh! I would love to come over and hang out for a peaceful afternoon:)
ReplyDeleteOh, yes! I get quite sidetracked sometimes observing the home decor! I need to check out a few of these movies again. Thanks for the reminder.
ReplyDeleteLoved this posting... a perfect way to spend a grey day!
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, I do pay attention to the decor and house settings in movies.
I like the house in this Little Women movie. I like the movie too.
