As the name of my blog indicates, I spend a lot of time thinking about home. Of course, my Heavenly Home is the one that is eternal, so that’s where I need to lay up my treasures, and that’s the one I’m striving for. But in the meantime, I have been given this tiny piece of the here-and-now—this home on the edge of town, this family, this neighborhood—in which to serve Him. And, though this is in the earthly realm, I want the things that happen here to be investments in the Heavenly realm.

gather. {at the farm stand}

We arrived at the farm stand in the early evening. As we carefully considered our choices (who can choose among the bounty?), we paused to chat with the farmer and his wife. We talked tractors and new grandbabies and pinched nerves. The farmer is our brother-in-law; the wife is Ron's sister.

Between snippets of conversation, we gathered Indian corn, Cinderella pumpkins, and Mexican hat pumpkins and put them in the wagon. More chatting, and then some butternut squash. More talk, more gourds. Ron and the farmer discussed sweet potatoes. The farmer walked over to his plants, crouched down and dug up a few, and handed them to Ron. Bekah chose some Baby Boos for her room and some for Kati who was at work.

The shadows lengthened, we gathered our selections, and headed home for an easy supper of leftover sloppy joes.

Do you gather autumn bounty from local farm stands? What do you choose?

This is day 2 in the series gather.  Click ~here~ to see more.

  1. There is a farmer's stand on the road to Sharptown -- just outside the town. They usually have a large variety of gords and pumpkins and "strange" looking things like "cinderella" and "turban" squash/ pumpkins. They have mini-pumpkins and gords of all sizes and colors.
    The prices are very reasonable.

  2. Soon our local market will shut down for the winter. I enjoy shopping there from Spring through the end of October...
    How nice that you know the local farmer :)

  6. Oh I love the look of all those gourds and the corn! Coincidentally, earlier tonight I scrounged around in the cedar chest and found my ears of dried Indian corn and put them out on the cookstove. My favorites are the gourds, corn, and pumpkin-colored mums. All things I like to gather this time of year - especially since our family is celebrating an early Thanksgiving this weekend.

  10. Oh, that looks like such fun! I would have carted away about as much bounty too. Sadly, I don't know where all the farm stands have gone around here. Wish I knew!
