As the name of my blog indicates, I spend a lot of time thinking about home. Of course, my Heavenly Home is the one that is eternal, so that’s where I need to lay up my treasures, and that’s the one I’m striving for. But in the meantime, I have been given this tiny piece of the here-and-now—this home on the edge of town, this family, this neighborhood—in which to serve Him. And, though this is in the earthly realm, I want the things that happen here to be investments in the Heavenly realm.

gather. {a time}

To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven:
A time to be born, and a time to die;
A time to plant, and a time to pluck what is planted;
A time to kill, and a time to heal;
A time to break down, and a time to build up;
A time to weep, and a time to laugh;
A time to mourn, and a time to dance;
A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones;
A time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
A time to gain, and a time to lose;
A time to keep, and a time to throw away;
A time to tear and a time to sew;
A time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
A time to love, and a time to hate;
A time of war, and a time of peace.

Ecclesiastes 3: 1-8

Oh God of glory and grace, give me the grace to keep silent when that is right, and the courage to speak at the appropriate time. May I accept the time of weeping and mourning as peacefully as I accept the time of laughing and dancing. In all times, may I honor You and bring You the glory that You are due. I pray for the discernment to know one time from another, and the wisdom to choose wisely and rightly.

  1. I echo your prayer, Cheryl. The older I get, the more I realize the importance of timing.

  2. Amen. As time goes on I understand more and more how every day there is opportunity for rejoicing and grieving, weeping and laughing. A time to choose joy and a time to come around others who are suffering...

  5. This bible verse is quoted here and there through a new book that I am reading - by a woman who has terminal breast cancer. As if I haven't shed enough tears already! But it is comforting to read about her story, as our story is written with similar sorrow.
