As the name of my blog indicates, I spend a lot of time thinking about home. Of course, my Heavenly Home is the one that is eternal, so that’s where I need to lay up my treasures, and that’s the one I’m striving for. But in the meantime, I have been given this tiny piece of the here-and-now—this home on the edge of town, this family, this neighborhood—in which to serve Him. And, though this is in the earthly realm, I want the things that happen here to be investments in the Heavenly realm.

{31 Days to Make a House a Home} Day 4 ~ Light Some Candles

At holiday time, I love to light candles.

When we are having company, I light lots of candles.

On a gray Monday morning, I love to light a candle.

With an afternoon read aloud and cup of tea, we sometimes light a candle.

(Are you getting the idea that I really like candles?)

Candlelight has such a homey ambience; it visually warms a room.

If you use scented candles, you have a multi-sensory experience.  (I always like to kill two birds with one stone, don't you?)  Personally, I prefer "food" scents (cinnamon, vanilla, coffee, apple cider) to floral ones.  (I also try to stick to vanilla when friends with allergies visit.)

Some of my favorites are:
  • Village Candle jar candles  Their scents are the best!  I am burning a Maple Butter jar candle right now, and it is splendiforous.
  • Pier One has great pillar candles.  I love their tea lights too.  My favorite Pier One scents are the autumn pumpkin-y, spice-y ones.  I also like the Island Orchard for summer.
  • Mainstay 3-oz. jar candles, at Walmart, are a cheap thrill at $1.00 per jar!  I keep a stash of Pumpkin Spice, Mulled Cider, Hazelnut Cream, and Vanilla.
  • Walmart also carries a line of Better Homes and Gardens jar candles that have some yummy scents.  I grabbed a Ginger Spice Cake to light on cozy winter nights.

Candlelightanother way to make your house a home.

  1. So, now who's the late night visitor? And who's the busy beaver? Imagine my surprise to come visit after the weekend and realize I have some catching up to do!

You are in your element Cheryl. I love these posts (just like I knew I would). Keep talking... I for one am taking notes!

  3. I adore candles too. They instantly add ambiance and warmth to any room! I also stick to fruity, or foodie scents as well. The floral ones are way too overwhelming most of the time!

  4. We must be long lost sisters! I love food scented candles too! I bought two Yankee candles yesterday from Hallmark. Each month they have 25% off their "scent of the month" candles. I bought spiced pumpkin and harvest scents. Love them!

  5. I Enjoy candles too Cheryl especially from now through Christmas, and "food" scents are my favorites. I also buy the dollar candles at WalMart and am so surprised that such a small candle can scent a large area. I like the idea of candles in the cupcake pan! I might just borrow this idea when I have company.

    Thanks for sharing.

  9. Got so excited that I booted myself right off and why? Because you mentioned and I see Village Candle there. Now I'm wondering if you are in my corner because Village Candle is a Maine company and the factory is not that far from here. Hmmmm...things to ponder...

  11. Oh, pumpkin or cinnamon candles this time of year just make me smile. In the spring and summer I love cantaloupe or green scented candles. Isn't it funny how women have such connections with candles?
