As the name of my blog indicates, I spend a lot of time thinking about home. Of course, my Heavenly Home is the one that is eternal, so that’s where I need to lay up my treasures, and that’s the one I’m striving for. But in the meantime, I have been given this tiny piece of the here-and-now—this home on the edge of town, this family, this neighborhood—in which to serve Him. And, though this is in the earthly realm, I want the things that happen here to be investments in the Heavenly realm.

Reunions, Fraps, and Fireworks

My husband's family has a big family reunion on the 4th of July every year.  Ron is one of eight children, and his father was one of eight children...so you can imagine how many aunts and uncles and cousins there are!  And now the cousins have their own children and grandchildren, and a few even have great-grandchildren.  It is a large group, even if only a portion of them attend.

Yesterday, for only the second time since we have been married (the other time I had a sick child), I didn't go to the reunion, this time because of the intense heat and accompanying humidity.  (Have I told you that I don't do heat well?  Oh, I have.  That many times?)  Ron did go, but the girls and I stayed home.

Well, we didn't actually stay at home.  We spent the afternoon at Barnes and Noble (in the comfort of air conditioning because I am a wimp), reading, browsing, and drinking Frappuccinos.  We all chose magazines to thumb through as we sipped:  Bekah a bridal magazine, Kati a craft magazine, and me a home magazine.  Go figure.  Bekah had a gift card from her birthday, so she did a little shopping too.

After dinner, we all went to see the fireworks display.  We had not been to see fireworks in years, as we're usually hot and tired from a busy day at the family reunion.  Bekah did not remember ever seeing fireworks, although she had been as a toddler.  (And unless you count last year when we could--just barely--see the fireworks from a nearby town from the vantage point of our front porch.)

Kati took her camera.  Bekah asked to use mine...and she took (get ready for this!) 164 pictures of fireworks!!  Yes, she did!  She was thrilled with the event, thrilled with each and every blaze of color in the sky, thrilled to be able to record it!   (It took us forever to download all those pics when we got back home. ~smile~)

Here is a sample of both girls' fireworks photography.  A very small sample.

Every year on the morning of the 4th, my husband says, "Today is the 4th of July.  Tomorrow it will be Christmas Eve."  And he's usually right.

  1. Looks like a perfectly wonderful day to me. I hope that Ron had a great day with his extended family, too. The fireworks we enjoyed were the Capitol Fourth kind and the local yahoo kind so I'm impressed with the fireworks photos! That was a lot of photos!

  2. Great photos! We went to the smaller fireworks show nearby -- which was still great -- but I didn't take any photos because I have a hard time getting nighttime shots to turn out.

  3. Sounds like a wonderful day, Cheryl! We worked at home in the morning, and at Kate & Alex's in the afternoon... they bought property!!!

    (And yes, it was HOT!)

Love Ron's comment about Christmas! We're putting a Christmas spot in the store, and I ran out today looking for Christmas lights... the lady at Rite Aid laughed out loud when I asked her if they had them out yet!

    That was a "no." :-D

    Stay cool!
