As the name of my blog indicates, I spend a lot of time thinking about home. Of course, my Heavenly Home is the one that is eternal, so that’s where I need to lay up my treasures, and that’s the one I’m striving for. But in the meantime, I have been given this tiny piece of the here-and-now—this home on the edge of town, this family, this neighborhood—in which to serve Him. And, though this is in the earthly realm, I want the things that happen here to be investments in the Heavenly realm.

Painting a Folk Art Box

I had been wanting to paint this box for a long time. It was a simple black two-drawer storage box we had bought for The Farmhouse bedroom (you can see it ~here~ in photos 4 and 5). I wanted to try my hand at painting a folk art scene . . . kind of like a colonial wall mural but in miniature.

The project was on last summer's to-do list. Didn't get done. It reappeared on this past summer's to-do list. Finally, I wrote this:

#justdoit

So I did.

my very professional paper plate palettes 😉

There are plenty of flaws, but I enjoyed the process and mistakes don't show with a perfunctory glance.

But I got it done!

After trying it all over the place, this is where it has landed.

Do you have projects that keep reappearing on the to-do list? Do you ever have to give yourself a pep talk? 😊

  1. I could write a book about all the projects that never get done. I really must sit down and do them. I think I need a note like yours on my calendar.

  2. It turned out so well! Do I ever have to give myself a pep talk? Nearly every day and that’s just to do the dishes. 😏 Sometimes I ask myself why I am procrastinating. That’s when it really gets interesting.

Oh, the conversations we have with ourselves . . . 😁

  3. Your painted box is so YOU, Cheryl! You did a beautiful job. I procrastinate all the time. I tell myself something else is more important--sometimes it is, and sometimes it's just putting it off! ♥

Yes! We are good at rationalizing, aren't we? (I know I am!)

  6. What a lovely box! You did a fantastic job Cheryl. I love the piece of furniture it is sitting on.

When I do/finish a job that I've been procrastinating about, I wonder why I put it off for so long?

Happy Fall and have a wonderful weekend ~ FlowerLady

    1. Thank you, Lorraine! Yes, I often have that very thought: Why did I put that off?

  7. So pretty! Did you have a picture to copy from or just a general idea in your head? Now you can move on to a wall!!

    1. Thanks, Melissa! I drew inspiration from many sources. I had half a dozen or more tabs open on my computer for ideas! I have wanted to do a wall mural for years, but I don't think I'm that good or that brave. 😬

  8. I love it!!! You did a great job and it looks fabulous on the antique cabinet. My folk art paints have all but dried up and it's been far too long. On my to do list this Fall is make one of those gorgeous wool Christmas trees you made last year. I have all the supplies so there shouldn't be any excuses.

    1. Thank you, Rosella! I was able to salvage enough paint to mix for the beginning of the project, but I also had to buy some new bottles to replace my dried up paints. I was hoping that they were still available for purchase!

Can't wait to see your wool tree! Be sure to share!

  9. I am sure I put a comment in before but I don't see it here. Anyway, love what you did with the box, and I think I asked in the previous one if you took a class sometime to learn the technique or are you just naturally that talented! (probably the latter!)

    1. Thanks, Dotsie! I am humbled by your vote of confidence! No, I never took a class, but I have done lots of trial-and-error painting over the years. I had a bunch of tabs up on my laptop, getting inspiration from all over the place. Maybe I should write a post linking to some of those sites . . .

(Sorry for comment troubles. I know that is frustrating. Ugh.)

  10. Cheryl, you did a wonderful job painting the box and it fits in so well with your décor and color scheme. And you answer your question about project re-appearing on the to-do list....it's the story of my life, girl!
