As the name of my blog indicates, I spend a lot of time thinking about home. Of course, my Heavenly Home is the one that is eternal, so that’s where I need to lay up my treasures, and that’s the one I’m striving for. But in the meantime, I have been given this tiny piece of the here-and-now—this home on the edge of town, this family, this neighborhood—in which to serve Him. And, though this is in the earthly realm, I want the things that happen here to be investments in the Heavenly realm.

A Favorite Cookie

I am a confirmed chocoholic. If a tray of Christmas cookies is set before me, I will almost always choose one with chocolate. On our family baking day this year, chocolate was a key ingredient in two of our four cookies.

That said, one of my favorite cookie recipes has no chocolate! They are a little spicy, a little chewy, and the perfect cookie to pair with a good cup of strong coffee. Delightful.

CRINKLE TOP MOLASSES COOKIE

Cream together:
  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 3/4 cup butter, softened
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 beaten eggs
Mix in:
  • 8 tablespoons molasses
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 4 teaspoons baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons ginger
  • 2 teaspoons cloves
  • 4 cups flour
Form into walnut-sized balls.  If desired, roll in coarse sugar.
Place 1 inch apart on cookie sheets. Bake at 350 degrees for 8-10 minutes.

* The original recipe was the 2002 winner of the Good Morning America Christmas Cookie Contest. I have altered the recipe a bit...I doubled it, and replaced half of the shortening with butter to reduce the amount of trans fat. Next time I may experiment wth using all butter. (All butter can't be bad, can it? ~wink~)

  1. This is Brian's favorite cookie, too! (I was thinking of making them today, but I'm feeling "unwell" (my cold) so I'm moving sloooowly and we are going to the lights tonight so I have other priorities.)

  2. I have that one...it's Martha Stewart's favorite cookie or touted as that. They are delicious and thin and crunchy on the outside, chewy on the inside. Right? Thank you for pointing me to this!

  3. Well...I would describe them as crunchy on the outside, chewy on the inside, but then I tend to underbake cookies (to keep them from getting too crispy). I had not heard that they were Martha's favorite recipe though.

    Happy baking! :-D
