As the name of my blog indicates, I spend a lot of time thinking about home. Of course, my Heavenly Home is the one that is eternal, so that’s where I need to lay up my treasures, and that’s the one I’m striving for. But in the meantime, I have been given this tiny piece of the here-and-now—this home on the edge of town, this family, this neighborhood—in which to serve Him. And, though this is in the earthly realm, I want the things that happen here to be investments in the Heavenly realm.

Is It a Boy or Is It a Girl?

"Sometimes," said Pooh, "the smallest things take up the most room in your heart."

Shortly after Christmas, we learned that our daughter Kristin and her husband Brian were expecting their seventh child! What joyful news!

Fast forward through weeks of morning (or all day) sickness and excited siblings and speculation on how the tie between boys and girls would be broken (I feel certain that Kristin would like to have fast forwarded through some of that!) . . . and we arrive at Kristin's sonogram last week and the gender reveal party on Sunday!

Kati and Bekah were ready for the party with their "Blessed Aunt" shirts. (The pink color simply represented the aunts themselves, not their vote on the gender.)

Kristin's church family blessed them with this very special evening. It was a night for families, for singles, for retired couples . . . anyone who wanted to join in the celebration.

Attendees brought food to share and a package of diapers. Each person made a prediction of boy or girl and wore the appropriate color clothespin. There was a super fun game in which everyone tried to identify whose baby photo was whose.

The climax of the evening was the cutting of the cake! Was there pink or blue cake under the cover of frosting?

  2. Such a fun evening. This has been such a difficult pregnancy so far with sickness (which still pops up occasionally) and more aches and pains, but there is joy, too! Finding out he is a boy makes it seem so real now. (The photos are in my phone, but Liz was the photographer.)

    1. Thanks for sharing our excitement, Martha Ellen! This is the first time that I have been to a gender reveal party, but it makes sense that these are the new thing. After all, with the changes in sonography and the ability to accurately determine the gender of an unborn baby, it naturally follows that we will celebrate accordingly. As you expressed it, "the outpouring of love" is the important part of such a celebration!

  9. How very special and Oh Boy! Congratulations to everyone. When my mom was expecting her 7th it ended up being twins so it was her 7th and 8th, a boy and a girl. Blessings!

    1. Same thing with Ron's mom: pregnancy #7 was actually child #7 and child #8! We have teased Kristin that maybe she'll follow in her grandmother's footsteps, but both of her sonograms have shown one baby!

      Thanks for sharing our excitement!

  10. Cheryl, what a great party! I love a nice old-fashioned bring-a-dish party for all ages. I've been to a few baby showers lately that have rivaled weddings in their formality, amount of work involved and expense.
