As the name of my blog indicates, I spend a lot of time thinking about home. Of course, my Heavenly Home is the one that is eternal, so that’s where I need to lay up my treasures, and that’s the one I’m striving for. But in the meantime, I have been given this tiny piece of the here-and-now—this home on the edge of town, this family, this neighborhood—in which to serve Him. And, though this is in the earthly realm, I want the things that happen here to be investments in the Heavenly realm.

Thrifty Thursday: Gift Box

My daughter Kristin has begun a new feature on her blog. It is Thrifty Thursday and it will run throughout the summer.

I'll be the first to admit that I am not the thriftiest member of my family, but I have learned a few things over the years of living with a thrifty man. Here is my contribution for the week: Keep a gift box.

I keep a box in my bedroom in which I gather gift possibilities. (Actually, it used to be a box, but it is now a large shopping bag that I semi-hide behind the chair in my bedroom—but you get the idea.)

Sometimes it’ll be a book or toy that I think one of my grandchildren will like. Or it may be that Pier I has candles on sale and I pick up a couple of extras. Or I find a cute box of stationery in Tuesday Morning, or a sweet-smelling hand soap at Marshalls. Then if I need a hostess gift, or a birthday add-on, or a prize for a party game, or something to send home with a grandchild on his or her Special Day, I can save myself some time and money and just nose around in the gift box for a special something.

If you want to read some thrifty tips (or add one of your own!), head on over to Kristin's Thrifty Thursday!

Pssst...My favorite stores for these little gifts are Marshalls, Tuesday Morning, Home Goods, and Target (check out the dollar section at the front of the store, and always the clearance items on the endcaps). Come to think of it, these are some of my favorite stores for many things!

What are your bargain stores?

  1. We've loaded up on gifts from Ollie's book section. Can't beat the prices!

  2. I do this as well. My son once happened upon the stash and thought that it was Christmastime again!

  3. Hi Cheryl,
Thank you for sharing this great tip, I used to do this but for some years now, I just quite and found myself paying full price when I needed something.I really like Tuesday Morning.

  4. Cheryl, YOUR favorite stores are MY favorite stores! Especially Marshall's. I love finding little gifts at antique stores, too, although I don't do much antiquing these days. We used to have such wonderful antique malls in our area, but most of them have gone out of business. I, too, gather gifts to keep on hand for special occasions. The problem I have is that when I get an item home, I have trouble parting with it. Sigh. Maybe I need to buy things that I don't love myself. But that's hard to do, isn't it? Hugs to you while you are missing Someone Special.

  5. Cheryl that is a wonderful idea! I think that is really being a thrifty shopper. Always thinking ahead! Thanks for the idea!

  6. hello!

i will have to check out your daughter's blog tomorrow, because i am going cross-eyed right now.
just wanted to come say hello! i hope your summer is going well!
i am like you with the same favorite stores. i love target. i mean love it!
we also have a fabulous second chance store for kids clothing around the corner. it is just ridiculous what i can find there. amazing deals. i know that doesn't help anyone else tho, unless you live in my neck of the woods.
hope you have a wonderful weekend.

  7. p.s.
i think it is fantastic that you & your daughter both blog. it really is a wonderful hobby that i love.

  8. We keep a storage bin for storing away gifts for Christmas that we get for great prices throughout the year. This is where we place generic gifts that we can't pass up but don't have a specific person in mind for, too. You're right, it saves a lot of money.
