As the name of my blog indicates, I spend a lot of time thinking about home. Of course, my Heavenly Home is the one that is eternal, so that’s where I need to lay up my treasures, and that’s the one I’m striving for. But in the meantime, I have been given this tiny piece of the here-and-now—this home on the edge of town, this family, this neighborhood—in which to serve Him. And, though this is in the earthly realm, I want the things that happen here to be investments in the Heavenly realm.

Early Fall Decorating

"Autumn is the mellower season,
and what we lose in flowers we more than gain in fruits."
~ Samuel Butler

Autumn is the season that makes my heart sing!  Since June, I have been itching for fall to arrive.  And since I consider September 1st the advent of fall, I need wait no longer to burn that pumpkin candle and festoon my house with gourds and Indian corn.

But, I just can't go all out with autumn decorating when I still have geraniums in my window boxes and impatiens on my back porch.  So until we go to the farm stand and buy our pumpkins and mums, I am adding some subtle fall touches, more of the fall fruit variety, which is actually quite September-y.

~ apples and pears in the yellow ware bowls~

~ homespun apple (crafted by Kati) atop the school cabinet~

~ even some pear-scented hand soap on the bathroom sink~

Add an apple-cinnamon candle for more fruity ambiance, and I can wait a few more days to get my pumpkins.

How do you decorate in early fall?  Do you ease into it, or just jump right in?

  1. Ease in. I'm still hanging with summer until the 21st. Your autumn touches are just right...they're September touches...the apples and the pears. Love the plaid apple Kati made...hope that she's feeling better each day. Is that link to a tutorial? I'll check.

I did venture out for apples today and selected a mum all tight with buds and two wee pumpkins. People are going to get so tired of seeing my kitchen windowsill. =D

  2. I generally ease in, but this year Rachel and I did our decorating in one day - other than our real pumpkins and mums for outside.

I put up a wreath on the house and put some fall flowers on the piano, and some berries on the shelf. Rachel did the space over our kitchen cupboards and it looks really nice!

I don't do over the top, just a touch here and there.
