I learned to love "Come, Ye Thankful People, Come" as a child, and ever since, I have loved Thanksgiving music.
Four or five years ago, I found a book that falls under the category of you-never-know-what-gem-you-will-discover-at-your-local-library: Thanksgiving: A Time to Remember, by Barbara Rainey. It had an eye-catching Thanksgiving-y cover that attracted my attention and so I pulled it from the shelf. There are beautiful illustrations inside too, as well as the history of Thanksgiving, ideas for establishing Thanksgiving traditions, and beautifully decorated pages for recording your own family’s blessings.
But the real treasure is the accompanying CD! Over and over I listen to these lovely instrumental arrangements of worshipful hymns. Included are “Come Ye Thankful People, Come,” “We Gather Together,” and “For the Beauty of the Earth”—all traditional Thanksgiving songs which I want my children to know (and which we have sung around our table on Thanksgiving day!)—as well as other hymns which inspire worship and gratitude such as “O God, Our Help in Ages Past” and “O For a Thousand Tongues.”
Today, I am sharing a little gathering of music, a medley of Thanksgiving hymns. (This medley is not from the Time to Remember CD.) Maybe I'm getting a little ahead of myself as it is not yet the end of October. But I don't think it's ever to early to count our blessings and offer praise to our Creator!

I'm trying to catch up on some of your posts and of course I love this one. Singing those Thanksgiving songs not only bring me to gratitude, but open up a wealth of childhood memories.
ReplyDeleteI have this book from Barbara Rainey, thought I think the cd may have been played to death! I need to check that out! I love Thanksgiving music - the songs you mentioned especially, Come, Ye Thankful People, Come, and For the Beauty of the Earth.

Oh, I love this! I yearn for those greeting card days! Have you ever just wanted to jump into one of those heart warming scenes that are sometimes portrayed on a card or in a book?? Those songs bring those visuals to mind when I hear them! A time when the main thing was gathering as a family to celebrate God's goodness...NOT to be confused with the day to go battle it out at the department stores!! I love Thanksgiving :)
